CHEATING WITH BAVARIAN CARDS |

The 32-card pack of Bavarian cards have been prepared for propagandistic purposes 1917. The individual cards are decorated with war scenes and military leaders. The cards number VII, VIII, IX and X are decorated with battlefield and military camp scenes. Svetozar Boroević, Hermann Kövess, Ferenc Rohr and Sándor Szurmay are displayed on the Under cards.On the Overs members of the General Staff of the Austro-Hungarian army, such as Arthur Arz von Straussenburg, Conrad von Hötzendorf, Archdukes Eugen and Joseph of Austria are depicted. The Kings are the rulers of the Central Powers: Charles I (IV) of Austria (Austria-Hungary), Emperor William II (Germany), Tsar Ferdinand I (Kingdom of Bulgaria) and Mehmed V (Ottoman Empire). Aces bear the following captions: Summer 1914, Winter 1914-15, Spring 1915, Autumn 1916. The backside of the cards reveals the purpose of production: [the cards] “have been made for the benefit of the widows and orphans of the fallen heroes on behalf of the MILITARY AID OFFICE OF THE ROY([al] H[ungarian] MINISTRY OF DEFENCE USING THE DRAWINGS BY FIRST LIEUTENANT LEÓ KOBER INSUR(gent)  BY THE HUNGARIAN PLAYING CARD FACTORY Ltd.
