HEROES' GATE

The Heroes' Gate commemorates the Hungarian victims of WW 1. According to the plans by István Pázmándy, it was built between 1936 and 1938. The attaching Neo-Romanesque building used to be the Heroes' Hall, which included the sarcophagus of the Unknown Soldier. From the 1950s on the memorial hall served as a lapidary, where various stone carvings found in the castle district were displayed. Nowadays it hosts a renewed exhibition and a visitors' centre.
